Humboldt/Thor- John E. Carter

John Ellis Carter, the son of Martin and Emily (Rice) Carter, was born June 12, 1916, in Renwick, Iowa. He was raised and educated in the area of his birth, graduating from Renwick High School.

On March 22, 1940, John was united in marriage with Lucille A. Wergeland at the Ullensvang Lutheran Parsonage in Thor. After John returned from the serving in the United States Navy, the couple made their home in Thor, where John owned and operated an insurance and real estate business. Lucille preceded him in death on December 19, 1996.

John was a member of Ullensvang Lutheran Church, serving on the church council and served as an usher. He was also a member of the Thor American Legion and the Humboldt Country Club.

John lived at Springvale Independent Senior Living until he moved to the Humboldt Care Center South in August 2010.

John passed away on Thursday, December 9, 2010, at the Humboldt Care Center South, at the age of 94 years. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Lucille; sister, Carolyn Marsden and brothers, Erle, George, Marion (Doc), Craig and Lynn Carter.

Those left to cherish his memory are two daughters, Jan Reed and husband Don of Eagle Grove and Carolyn Matteson and husband Jon of Thor; son, Gary Carter and wife Sue of Pocatello, ID; 7 grandchildren: Kyle Reed (Mandy), Kirk Reed, Tony Matteson, Tracey Toenjes (John), Sabine Rilling (Dave), Michael Carter (Denise) and Michelle Ellis (Bob) and six great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be Monday, December 13, 2010, at 11:00 a.m. at the Ullensvang Lutheran Church in Thor with Pastor Darryl Landsverk officiating. Visitation will be Sunday from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. at the Foust Funeral Home in Eagle Grove. Burial will be in East Ullensvang Cemetery in Thor.

Memorials may be left to the discretion of the family.
