Mary Catherine Chapman was born on August 10, 1947 to Stephen and Elma (Swanson) Garbier, in Hawarden, Iowa. She graduated from Kuemper Catholic High School in 1965 and received her Bachelor's Degree in Teaching from Kansas State University. Mary started her teaching career in Sioux Falls, SD and came to Eagle Grove, IA in 1975. She taught physical education, coached volleyball, led Quiz Bowl, and was a National Honor Society sponsor.

Mary was united in marriage with Arthur Chapman on June 6, 1980, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Eagle Grove. To this union a daughter, Elizabeth was born.

Mary enjoyed watching and attending sporting events and cheering on the Eagles, Hawkeyes, Packers, and Cubs. She loved reading, golfing, gardening, canning, knitting, scrap booking, and watching her favorite T.V. programs – The Waltons and Little House On The Prairie. One of her favorite past times was doing trivia games including cross word puzzles and watching Jeopardy. Mary cherished spending time with her beloved husband sitting on the patio listening to the birds. She was involved in many community organizations including Equality Club, Book Club, Garden Club, and Culinary Arts Club. Mary dedicated her life serving the Lord at Sacred Heart Catholic Church; she was a Bible study leader, lector, eucharistic minister, served on the Altar Society and Social Concerns Committee and Guild. We knew Mary as a selfless wife, mother, sister, teacher, and friend.

Mary is survived by her husband of 37 years, Arthur Chapman of Eagle Grove, IA; daughter: Elizabeth Sheiner (Chad) of Layton, UT; grandson Roman Sheiner; step sons: David Chapman (Angela) of Charles City, IA, Christopher Chapman (Rosita) of Henderson, NV and step son-in-law, Robert Wallentine Jr. of Wichita, KS; four step grandchildren: Rita Becker (Peter), Jacob Wallentine, Jonathan Chapman, and Joshua Wallentine (Madeline); two step great-grandchildren, Montgomery and Evelyn Becker; three sisters: Elma Heidemann (August) of Ottawa, Ontario, Anne Lofboom (Thomas) of Stillwater, MN and Nancy True (Stephen) of Wauwatosa, WI; brother, Stephen Garbier (Jean) of Watertown, MA and many nieces, nephews, cousins, other family and friends.
